Record #135748:

Minnets land- om den geografiske namngivningens historia i arktis / Urban Wråkberg.

Title: Minnets land- om den geografiske namngivningens historia i arktis / Urban Wråkberg.
Translated title: Land of memorials - on the history of geographical naming in the Arctic.
Author(s): Wråkberg, Urban.
Date: 1995.
Publisher: Trondheim: University of Trondheim
Language: Swedish.
In: Svalbard - fra ingenmannsland til del av Norge. (1995.),
Abstract: Article describes three principles of naming and relates them to names on Svalbard. Sailors often changed original names to ones easier to say in their own language. Others revised for nationalistic reasons, because of more accurate surveying (especially longitude), or on whim, as did La Recherche. Sir Martin Conway, Prof Gerard De Geer and Norwegian cartographers in 1930s had chief influence on choice of names, which latter produced in "The Place-Names of Svalbard".
