Viking expansion northwards: mediaeval sources / Tette Hofstra, Kees Samplonius.

Title: Viking expansion northwards: mediaeval sources / Tette Hofstra, Kees Samplonius.
Author(s): Hofstra, Tette.
Samplonius, Kees.
Date: 1995.
In: Arctic. (1995.), Vol. 48(3) (1995)
Abstract: Evidence for Scandinavian activities in north-western part of Barents Sea is scanty. Southern fringe was crossed more than once by Vikings on way to Bjarmaland (Russia). Ohthere's voyage in 9th Cent. and Old Norse sources indicate early trade links, bringing tusks, precious furs and skins. This and Saami trade were controlled by Norse chieftains on coast who competed with kings of Norway for power. Both were involved with Bjarmaland expeditions. Last one was in 1222. Geography of area remained woolly.
