Use of mark-recapture experiments to monitor seal populations subject to catching / Nils Øien, Torger Øritsland.
Title: | Use of mark-recapture experiments to monitor seal populations subject to catching / Nils Øien, Torger Øritsland. |
Author(s): | Øien, Nils. Øritsland, Torger. |
Date: | 1995. |
Publisher: | Bergen: Elsevier Science B.V. |
Abstract: | From 1977-1994 about 17,000 harp seal pups were tagged in Greenland Sea and 18,000 in White Sea. Recoveries were 870 and 50. These indicate that Greenland Sea seals share feeding grounds with both north-west Atlantic and White Sea harp seals share feeding but not breeding grounds. Recaptures 1 year or more after tagging were used to estimate pup production for several years during period. Bias is obvious and mechanism is suggested for it, with possible remedy, as no other method is practicable at present. |
