Record #134519:
Geomagnetic storm and substorm observed from Spitsbergen / D.A.R. Simmons, F. Sigernes, K. Henriksen.
Title: | Geomagnetic storm and substorm observed from Spitsbergen / D.A.R. Simmons, F. Sigernes, K. Henriksen. |
Author(s): | Simmons, D. A. R. Sigernes, F. Henriksen, K. |
Date: | 1995. |
In: | Polar Record. (1995.), Vol. 31(179) (1995) |
Abstract: | Study confirms that auroras of nightside oval population consist of two main types: storm and substorm. Former, less common, is caused by fast particle streams generated in violent solar wind and hitting upper ionosphere. Storms world-wide may last days. Latter is almost daily and lasts for hour or two around geomagnetic midnight. It is generated by impulsive release of stored magnetospheric energy from substorm onset region in Earth's magnetotail. |
