Abstract: | Paper investigates impact of 1783 eruption of Laki volcanic fissure. This was most violent, extensive and prolonged volcanic episode in northern hemisphere during modern era. Detailed examination of newspaper accounts and other documentary evidence reveals dramatic effect on weather over much of Western Europe. It shows that Icelandic eruptions can cause serious environmental damage and extreme climatic disturbance in locations far from source. Variety of human responses is shown. |
