Abstract: Article sets tourism in Svalbard against its own history, 100 years old in some form, that of exploitation of archipelago and its seas and Norwegian nature-romanticism. Result is that plan for future is for "tourism and wilderness life". Author concludes that travel on islands has form of authenticity absent from much modern tourism.
