Abstract: Sketches main lines of interaction in northern Fennoscandia and north-western Russia from younger Iron Age to 14th Cent. Ethnic groups were part of broader network of trade, barter and tribute exaction. Asymmetry is linked to introduction of state authority and boundaries. Use of ethnonyms - vuojolainen, vatja, Biarmia, Wizzi, čuds, Kven/Kainuu, dáža, laddelaš, jem/Hämä/Tavast, sum/Suoma, ruošša and lop' - is discussed.
