Abstract: Chapter describes traditional livelihoods of region, fisheries, whaling with sea tragedies but sense of freedom and loneliness; even stone-age drawings of animals perpetuate link. Section gives geography, very broken coast, large, sparsely populated areas and inland of "the hundred miles (Norwegian)", lonely spaces. Harvest of nature includes, hay and cloudberries, also tourism to coast and North Cape. Hunting and trapping gave way to farming and reindeer-herding. New fishing methods and controls are described and possible future, if gas industry expands, sketched at Slettnes.
