Abstract: Slow turnover of dead organic matter leads to extreme shortage of nutrients. Studies were carried out under conditions of Spitsbergen tundra from 1980-1989 in seaside plain Kaffiøyra. 25 samples of each of three plant species were put in litter bags for up to 9 years and further samples analyzed for dry matter, carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium.
