Abstract: Presents history of images of numerically small peoples of Russian North, both popular and official. Reviews Russian and Soviet policies towards these peoples and examines how these policies have been influenced by prevailing attitudes toward northern peoples. Uses published sources but also variety of cultural texts of Russian and indigenous contemporaries together with images from popular Russian fiction. Covers period of four hundred years from conquest of Siberia to present day. Explores wider views of ethnic identity, nationalist rhetoric and colonialism.
