Abstract: Describes Russian system of 'zapovedniks', strictly protected reserves closed to tourism, hunting, fishing, geological expeditions and other uses, for which access for scientific purposes is possible only on application to zapovednik administration. Currently eight such reserves north of Arctic Circle: Laplandskiy, Kandalakshskiy, Wrangel Island, Taimyrskiy, Ulst-Lenskiy, Putoranskiy, Pasvik and Great Arctic.
