Climatic impact of the A.D. 1783 Asama (Japan) eruption was minimal: evidence from the GISP2 ice core / G.A. Zielinski, and 8 others.
Title: | Climatic impact of the A.D. 1783 Asama (Japan) eruption was minimal: evidence from the GISP2 ice core / G.A. Zielinski, and 8 others. |

Abstract: | Assessing impact is complicated by concurrent eruption of Laki, Iceland. By using amount of volcanologically derived SO₄²⁻ recorded in Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 (GISP2) ice core for AD 1108 Asama eruption and relative magnitude of this and AD 1783 event, stratospheric loading of H₂SO₄ for 1783 eruption can be estimated. Further calculations suggest minimal climatic effects in northern hemisphere from 1783 eruption, thus any volcanically induced cooling in mid-1780s is probably due to Laki eruption. |
