Abstract: Describes instability of high-wall slopes exposed to thawing in surface coal mines in permafrost regions. Suggests remedial measures to prevent shallow as well as deep slope failures. Practical design configuration, which involves introduction of wide bench at base of permafrost layer, is proposed.
