Abstract: Special sensor microwave imager (SSM/I) data are presented and discussed in terms of usefulness as initialization field for newly developed Polar Ice Prediction System 2.0 (PIPS2.0). Results from several forecasts, with and without SSM/I initialization, are compared to each other to other available data in order to determine degree of improvemet that SSM/I can lend to existing system.
