Use of time series SAR data to resolve ice type ambiguities in newly-opened leads / Ronald Kwok, Glenn F. Cunningham.

Title: Use of time series SAR data to resolve ice type ambiguities in newly-opened leads / Ronald Kwok, Glenn F. Cunningham.
Author(s): Kwok, Ronald.
Cunningham, Glenn F.
Date: 1994.
Publisher: Piscataway, NJ: Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers
In: IGARSS'94 : International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium : Surface and Atmospheric Remote Sensing: Technologies, Data Analysis and Interpretation : California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California USA, August 8-12, 1994. (1994.), Vol.2.
Abstract: Describes method for locating recently opened leads using ERS-1 SAR imagery. Assuming that backscatter of new lead adds to nominally invariant backscatter histogram, area of new ice which has been created can be calculated and temporal evolution of backscatter of this new ice can be recorded. This temporal signature is related to atmospheric conditions during rapid growth phase of new ice.
