Ice flow around large obstacles as indicated by basal ice exposed at the margin of the Greenland ice sheet / Peter G. Knight, David E. Sugden, Christopher D. Minty.

Title: Ice flow around large obstacles as indicated by basal ice exposed at the margin of the Greenland ice sheet / Peter G. Knight, David E. Sugden, Christopher D. Minty.

Abstract: Demonstrates way in which variations in distribution of basal-ice layer exposed at margin of ice sheet can be used to identify patterns of subglacial processes. Develops empirical model of ice flow close to lobate margin of ice sheet in which ice convergence and divergence and limited subglacial melting affect character and distribution of basal ice at margin. Tendency for convergence and divergence to thicken basal layer in lobate areas and to thin it in inter-lobate ones. In certain circumstances, basal melting may remove much of layer from beneath snouts of larger lobes, thus causing basal layer to be thicker in intermediate location.
