Record #129787:
Decay of a high Arctic lake-ice cover: observations and modelling / Richard Heron, Ming-ko Woo.
Title: | Decay of a high Arctic lake-ice cover: observations and modelling / Richard Heron, Ming-ko Woo. |
Author(s): | Heron, Richard. Woo, Ming-ko. |
Date: | 1994. |
In: | Journal of Glaciology. (1994.), Vol. 40(135) (1994) |
Abstract: | Decay of ice of Small Lake, Cornwallis Island, NWT, was studied for two years. Melt at upper surface accounted for 75% of decrease in ice thickness, where as 25% occurred at ice--water interface. Energy-balance model, incorporating density reduction due to internal ice melt, was used to simulate decay of ice cover. Overall performance of model was satisfactory despte periods when computed results differed from observed ice decay. Energy-balance calculations indicated that absorption of shortwave radiation within ice provided 52% of melt energy, while 33 and 15% came from surface-energy balance and heat flux from water. |
