Record #129678:

Effect of a heated drilling bit and borehole liquid on thermoelastic stresses in an ice core / O.V. Nagornov, V.S. Zagorodnov, J.J. Kelley.

Title: Effect of a heated drilling bit and borehole liquid on thermoelastic stresses in an ice core / O.V. Nagornov, V.S. Zagorodnov, J.J. Kelley.
Author(s): Nagornov, O. V.
Zagorodnov, V. S.
Kelley, J. J.
Date: 1994.
In: National Institute of Polar Research. Memoirs. Special Issue. (1994.), Vol. 49 (1994)
Abstract: Investigates effect of heat transfer during thermal electric drilling, resulting in heat fracture. Prototype drill was tested. Experimental studies and model simulations show that thermal stresses in ice cores are proportional to ratio of length of drilling bit to rate of penetration. Maximal thermal stresses exhibit only weak dependence on type of borehole liquid.
