Thermal modeling of ice cores and boreholes via the finite element technique / Debendra K. Das, S. Srikanta Jois.
Title: | Thermal modeling of ice cores and boreholes via the finite element technique / Debendra K. Das, S. Srikanta Jois. |
Author(s): | Das, Debendra K. Jois, S. Srikanta. |
Date: | 1994. |
In: | National Institute of Polar Research. Memoirs. Special Issue. (1994.), Vol. 49 (1994) |
Abstract: | Axisymmetric finite-element computer program was developed to calculate heat transfer in cylindrical (r-z) geometry. Technique is applicable to steady-state and time-dependent problems and can handle convective, temperature-prescribed and heat-flux-prescribed boundary conditions. Tests with various materials and boundary conditions were conducted and showed good agreement with exact analytical and numerical solutions. Model was then applied to determine temperature profiles in ice cores and subsequent investigations were made to determine rate of freezing in borehole and movement of freeze-front with time. Results were generated for predicting complete freezeup of ice test well maintained by Polar Ice Coring Office for various boundary conditions. |
