Record #129666:

The AMANDA project: drilling precise, large-diameter holes using hot water / Bruce Koci.

Title: The AMANDA project: drilling precise, large-diameter holes using hot water / Bruce Koci.
Author(s): Koci, Bruce.
Date: 1994.
In: National Institute of Polar Research. Memoirs. Special Issue. (1994.), Vol. 49 (1994)
Abstract: Antarctic muon and neutrino detector array (AMANDA) requires drilling of multiple hot-water holes 50 cm in diameter to depths exceeding 1 km. Strings of photo multiplier tubes 200 m long are then lowered into holes and allowed to freeze in. Holes must be vertical and parallel; drilling techniques and instrumentation to provide these conditions are described.
