Abstract: Comparison between backscatter models and field measurements, made in February and March 1992, shows that ERS-1 SAR backscatter from Baltic Sea ice is highly dependent on surface roughness of level and ridged ice. Theoretical backscatter model for level ice and empirical model for deformed ice are combined to cover total range of roughness scales present. Inverse model may be used to estimate ice-surface roughness from ERS-1 SAR images during dry snow conditions.
