Record #129472:

Unusual flood events from an Alpine glacier: observations and deductions on generating mechanisms / J. Warburton, C.R. Fenn.

Title: Unusual flood events from an Alpine glacier: observations and deductions on generating mechanisms / J. Warburton, C.R. Fenn.
Author(s): Warburton, J.
Fenn, C. R.
Date: 1994.
In: Journal of Glaciology. (1994.), Vol. 40(134) (1994)
Abstract: Sequence of flood events at Bas Glacier d'Arolla, Switzerland, July 1987, was triggered by heavy rain storms. Describes sequence of events and deduces likely explanations for each phase. Bottom-up surcharging of poorly developed subglacial drainage system is preferred explanation for overflow event, where water cascades from moulins over glacier snout. Later subglacial outburst is explained as extreme "spring" event. Whereas flood sequence was triggered by intense storm, englacially stored waters are believed to have contributed most of flood waters.
