Record #129470:

Thermoluminescence in suspended sediment of glacier meltwater streams / Alastair M.D. Gemmell.

Title: Thermoluminescence in suspended sediment of glacier meltwater streams / Alastair M.D. Gemmell.
Author(s): Gemmell, Alastair M. D.
Date: 1994.
In: Journal of Glaciology. (1994.), Vol. 40(134) (1994)
Abstract: To investigate factors controlling natural levels of thermoluminescence (NTL) of fluvioglacially transported suspended sediments, samples were taken from meltwater stream of Sólheimajökull, southern Iceland. NTL was measured and results were compared with fluctuations in suspended-sediment load and in flow depth of stream. Ratio of 325 and 375°C regions of NTL spectrum was more closely related to sediment load and flow depth than were individual regions. NTL fluctuations appear to be related to changes over time in sources of sediment entrained by stream, and these changes are related to diurnal temperature cycles plus precipitation events. Such fluctuations raise doubts as to validity of bulk sampling procedure in TL dating of Quaternary fluvioglacial sediments.
