| Abstract: | Palaeoenvironmental data were analyzed from terrestrial, lake, and marine sediments collected near Arctic Bay. 18 new radiocarbon dates provide chronological control. Most reliable dates were from sandy peats and low-organic lake sediments; these indicate that deglaciation was underway by 9 ka BP rather than 16 ka BP. Sea-ice conditions were severe enough to inhibit growth of diatoms until 6 ka BP, but growth increased between 3 and 2.5 ka BP, indicating warmer surface waters. After this, diatom growth decreased sharply. |
