Observations and modeling of thermally induced stresses in first-year sea ice / James K. Lewis, Walter B. Tucker, III, Peter J. Stein.

Title: Observations and modeling of thermally induced stresses in first-year sea ice / James K. Lewis, Walter B. Tucker, III, Peter J. Stein.
Author(s): Lewis, James K.

Date: 1994.
In: Journal of Geophysical Research. (1994.), Vol. 99(C8) (1994)
Abstract: During spring 1992, ice property, geophone, meteorological, and stress data were collected on first-year ice in Allen Bay, south-west of Cornwallis Island in sea-ice mechanics experiment which aimed to specify average characteristics of ice, use these in model of thermally induced stresses in ice, and examine fracturing generated by these stresses. It was found that fracturing occurred in area with 10 to 15 cm snow cover; snow cover had been scored down to surface of ice; and cracks were found in ice under each location where snow had been scored. Cracks were 5 to 6 m long and >15 cm deep.
