Abstract: Authors surveyed densities of small mammals on 17 islands in Lake Inari in Finnish Lapland during five years to estimate degree of spatial synchrony in dynamics of microtine rodents (having 4-5 year cycle in Lapland) and shrews. Most island populations were in complete synchrony with mainland populations with synchrony also in same-island rodent and shrew populations. Discussion of results tends to rule out nomadic avian predators in maintaining synchrony but to find evidence that small mustelids, especially stoats, do affect it.
