Herd composition and behaviour of white whales (Delphinapterus leucas) in two Canadian Arctic estuaries / Thomas G. Smith, Michael O. Hammill, Anthony R. Martin.

Abstract: White whales occupy Nastapoka River and Cunningham Inlet estuaries in north-eastern Canada each summer. Numbers build to 260 and 1750. Distribution in estuaries is influenced by state of tides and partly by river outflow. Few adult males seem to be present, herd being mainly of females, calves and weaned juveniles. Some evidence is that basic social units are matrilines consisting of adult nursing females with older female offspring. Age structure changes seasonally with increasing proportion of nursing pairs. Behaviour was grouped into four activity classes, much appearing to relate to shedding old skin.
