Abstract: Narwhals have been observed along east coast of Greenland from 64°10′aN to 81°N with fjord complexes as important inshore summering areas. They occur from ice breakup to new ice period and at entrances to fjords in winter. Historical information shows that they are present in pack ice between Greenland and Svalbard in winter, and these may comprise single population. Catch in eastern Greenland from 1981-1990 has averaged 80 animals. White whales (Delphinapterus leucas) are rare, probably due to severe ice and lack of suitable shallow water.
