Abstract: Examines impact of environment on perception and representation of geometric objects and presents new typology for classifying spatial skills. Based on results of interviews with 10- and 11-year-olds from radically differing environments (Povungnituk and Lac Mégantic in north and south Québec respectively). Findings raise questions about certain aspects of Piaget's theory of cognitive development in children.
