Record #128830:

Unusual ice formations / Gustav Bjørbaek.

Title: Unusual ice formations / Gustav Bjørbaek.
Author(s): Bjørbaek, Gustav.
Date: 1994.
In: Weather. (1994.), Vol. 49(5) (1994)
Abstract: Presents photograph showing "upside-down" icicle protruding from crack in rock, taken in November 1992 by G. Aase, in Norway. Author requests explanation of this phenomenon. In reply, another similar photograph is shown with icicle protruding from dish, taken in December 1992 by L. Levy, in Sussex. John Maybank replied to similar letter published in Weather, 1959, 14(4) :151; this reply is now reprinted: "icicle" is caused by fact that water expands upon freezing in limited area (e.g. crack in rock or dish). Another unusual ice pinnacle is shown in photograph on p.175.
