Radar measurements of melt zones on the Greenland ice sheet / Kenneth C. Jezek, Prasad Gogineni, M. Shanableh.
Title: | Radar measurements of melt zones on the Greenland ice sheet / Kenneth C. Jezek, Prasad Gogineni, M. Shanableh. |
Author(s): | Jezek, Kenneth C. Gogineni, Prasad. Shanableh, M. |
Date: | 1994. |
In: | Geophysical Research Letters. (1994.), Vol. 21(1) (1994) |
Abstract: | Firm metamorphosis is dominated by seasonal melt, which leads to marked contrasts in vertical structure of winter and summer firn. This snow regime is also one of brightest targets on Earth. Surface-based microwave radar measurements combined with detailed observations of physical properties of firn showed that summer ice-lens formation in previous winter's snowpack is mechanism responsible for strong electromagnetic response. This finding has important implications for monitoring and understanding changes in ice-sheet volume using spaceborne microwave sensors. |
