Record #128466:

Glaciotectonic structures along the southern Barents shelf margin / Joar Saettem.

Title: Glaciotectonic structures along the southern Barents shelf margin / Joar Saettem.
Author(s): Saettem, Joar.
Date: 1994.
Publisher: Rotterdam/Brookfield: A.A. Balkema
In: Formation and deformation of glacial deposits; proceedings of the Meeting of the Commission on the Formation and Deformation of Glacial Deposits/Dublin/Ireland/May 1991. (1994.),
Abstract: Illustrates how glaciotectonic structures and features can be recognized by methods used for marine geological investigation. Borehole located at 428 m water depth penetrates mid-Cretaceous sedimentary rocks that are 15 to 25 m thick, resting on Pleistocene till. These rocks are interpreted as part of buried glaciotectonic cupola-hills formed by grounded ice sheet/stream, which probably extended to shelf break. Irregular bathymetry in southwesternmost part of Barents Sea is partly related to glaciotectonic event which mainly affected glaciomarine/marine sediments. Glaciotectonics are inferred from bathymetric and high resolution seismic data, partly by comparing seismic signature with that of cored structure farther north. All these structures probably formed during Late Weichselian and suggest several ice advances to outermost shelf in area at this time.
