Record #128419:

Fissure-fill and tunnel-fill sediments: expressions of permafrost and increased hydrostatic pressure / Risto A. Kumpulainen.

Title: Fissure-fill and tunnel-fill sediments: expressions of permafrost and increased hydrostatic pressure / Risto A. Kumpulainen.
Author(s): Kumpulainen, Risto A.
Date: 1994.
In: Journal of Quaternary Science : JQS. (1994.), Vol. 9(1) (1994)
Abstract: Network of fissure fillings and pipes cuts Quaternary gravelly delta deposits north-east of Myvatn on axis of North Icelandic rift zone. Delta was formed in ice-contact lake during deglaciation towards end of last glaciation. Later lake was drained and permafrost conditions developed in poorly sorted gravel deposits. Hydrostatic pressure was transmitted from adjacent glacier to non-frozen core of delta beneath permafrost crust and seasonally active layer. Owing to increased hydrostatic pressure, network of fissures was opened along taliks, in which ground-water flow and sediment transport were established.
