520 3# ‡aGPS geodetic observations 1986-1992 spanning oblique plate boundary on Reykjanes Peninsula, SW Iceland, show that left-lateral shear strain is accumulating in area. Principal axis of extension is perpendicular to strike of fractures within volcanic systems on Peninsula. Direction of maximal left- lateral shear strain is same as trend of seismic zone on Peninsula. Continuous aseismic slip of North American-Eurasian plates below locking depth on Peninsula can explain observed depth of earthquakes, width of deformation zone determined from recent fissuring and faulting and GPS measurements of strain.
