Record #128398:

The North East Water polynya (Greenland Sea) I. A physical concept of its generation / W. Schnieder, Gereon Budéus.

Title: The North East Water polynya (Greenland Sea) I. A physical concept of its generation / W. Schnieder, Gereon Budéus.
Author(s): Schnieder, W.
Budéus, Gereon.
Date: 1994.
In: Polar Biology. (1994.), Vol. 14 (1994)
Abstract: Physical observations of the North East Water (NEW) polynya were collected in June 1991. Northward coastal current interacts with persistent shelf ice barrier under which water can flow, but that retains floes and therefore protects NEW area from ice advection. In summer, combination of currents, barrier and air-sea heat balance gives rise to polynya. Surface melt water is retained by shelf ice barrier, causing neutral vertical stability in its lee. Sea ice melting and land runoff are then distinct sources of vertical stability enabling development of plankton blooms, especially in northern part of NEW.
