Polar- und Meeresforschung. Hintergründe der deutschen Polarforschung von den Anfängen bis heute / Reinhard A. Krause.

Title: Polar- und Meeresforschung. Hintergründe der deutschen Polarforschung von den Anfängen bis heute / Reinhard A. Krause.
Translated title: Polar and sea exploration. Background to the German Polar exploration from the beginning to today.
Author(s): Krause, Reinhard A.
Date: 1993.

Abstract: Outline up to foundation of Alfred Wegener Institute in 1981, reflecting changes of paradigms in politics and science. Under influence of Petermann, German exploration of North took up ideas not discussed since 18th Cent., combined with Austria to gain experience of polar regions for scientists and sailors, and participated in Heroic Age of exploration. German scientists set up first international polar year, helped by Scandinavian precedents, and leading to work of Wegener and von Neumayer, who placed Antarctic research under aegis of geophysics, von Drygalski and Filchner. Political considerations underlay both 1939 and 1979 German Antarctic activities.
