Record #127805:

Geochemistry and origin of Pliocene and Pleistocene ash layers from the Iceland Plateau, Site 907 / Christian Lacasse, and 6 others.

Title: Geochemistry and origin of Pliocene and Pleistocene ash layers from the Iceland Plateau, Site 907 / Christian Lacasse, and 6 others.
Author(s): Lacasse, Christian.
Date: 1993.
In: Ocean Drilling Program. Proceedings. Scientific Results. (1993.), Vol. 151(17) (1993)
Abstract: Upper 90 m of sediments contain numerous well preserved volcanic ash layers that provide excellent record of source and timing of major Pliocene and Pleistocene explosive eruptions. 23 tephra layers and 6 ash zones were analyzed for major and trace element chemistry and grain size. Relative ages were estimated from palaeomagnetic and oxygen isotope stratigraphy. Most tephra layers are result of ash fallout from large explosions. Major element composition of glasses shows four groups: basalt, basaltic andesite, trachyte and rhyolite. Layers are related to Icelandic or Jan Mayen rock series.
