Abstract: | Considers special case of indentation-induced damage in ice where microcracked zone directly beneath indenter takes shape of isosceles triangle, and overall failure is characterized by unstable propagation of apex crack. Failure criterion and related size effect are derived and compared to previously published results of laboratory and test-basin studies on fresh-water ice. |
