| Abstract: | Article sets scene of bitterly cold winter weather in huge fishing grounds stretching from East Greenland to Barents Sea and north to shores of Norway and Russia. Maps show monthly icing-over near (NW) Iceland from 1965-1968, others water temperatures in Arctic Ocean in January and air temperatures and ice cover in February. Article describes research into icing-up of ships, with wind added to above factors, causing spray-ice and taking-on-board heavy freezing seas. Diagrams illustrate further freezing effects of wind speed. Descriptions of particular cases are given. |
