Glacier lakes and outburst floods in the Nepal Himalaya / T. Yamada, C.K. Sharma.

Title: Glacier lakes and outburst floods in the Nepal Himalaya / T. Yamada, C.K. Sharma.
Author(s): Yamada, T.
Sharma, C. K.
Date: 1993.
Publisher: Wallingford, Oxfordshire: IAHS Press
In: Snow and glacier hydrology. Proceedings of an International Symposium held at Kathmandu, Nepal, 16-21 November 1992. (1993.),
Abstract: Floods caused by glacier outburst have been frequent here, occurring more than every three years over past 30 years since 1960s. Nine potentially dangerous glaciers were identified from flight observations made during pre- and post-monsoon seasons in 1991. Field surveys were made in April 1992 at Imja glacier lake, Khumbu; maximum depth of lake was 98.5 m and total amount of stored water is 28x10⁶ m³. Since lake is dammed by ice-cored moraine, it is considered to be dangerous.
