Record #126778:

Biotic accumulation of glacier melting in Yala glacier, Langtang region, Nepal Himalaya / Shiro Kohshima, Katsumoto Seko, Yoshitaka Yoshimura.

Title: Biotic accumulation of glacier melting in Yala glacier, Langtang region, Nepal Himalaya / Shiro Kohshima, Katsumoto Seko, Yoshitaka Yoshimura.
Author(s): Kohshima, Shiro.
Seko, Katsumoto.
Yoshimura, Yoshitaka.
Date: 1993.
Publisher: Wallingford, Oxfordshire: IAHS Press
In: Snow and glacier hydrology. Proceedings of an International Symposium held at Kathmandu, Nepal, 16-21 November 1992. (1993.),
Abstract: During monsoon season, ablation surface of glacier is covered with algae and bacteria, and resembles dark-coloured mud. Impact of this material was studied in 1991; mud-like material was removed at several plots and rates of surface melting compared to those at control plots. Latter were 3 times larger than at experimental plots. Heat balance, calculated from meteorological data recorded on glacier, suggests that 90% of ablation can be attributed to net radiation. These results suggest that biotic albedo reduction affects heat and mass balances considerably.
