Abstract: Qualitative behaviour of this glacier is well known since 1599. Quantitatively, it can be described by changes in area and volume since 1889, by nass balance data since 1965, and by hydrological data since 1974. Relationship of this information to different sections of processes which link climatic changes to glacier variations is outlined. Hydrological studies aiming at modelling runoff are explained. Modelling has two-step approach: computing melt energy available at surface, and calculating travel times of meltwater. Each part is treated as separate linear reservoir with total runoff resulting from superposition of outflow of three systems (snow, firn, bare ice)
