Abstract: Objective of study was to find new retrieval algorithms to estimate atmospheric water vapour, total water path, ice path and surface rain rate over ocean from SSM/I measurements by simulating radiative transport through cloudy and precipitating atmospheres, including multiple-scattering and polarization effects. Highly variable vertical structures of atmosphere, clouds and rain are simulated to provide global applicability.
