Abstract: Study of dependency of unfrozen water content of porous media at subfreezing temperatures on mineralogy, size and surface properties of particles. Series of well-characterized monodisperse powders and natural soils were examined by various techniques. Melting process and, hence, amount of unfrozen water remaining unfrozen in porous media at subfreezing temperatures, are governed by surface melting, curvature effects, and impurity effects. Theoretical treatment of these effects are consistent with experimental results.
