| Abstract: | Satellite synthetic aperture radar images of St Marys, Connecticut and White rivers were acquired from December 1992 to May 1993. Data for four images were processed to determine river-ice conditions. Extensive databases of past ice conditions, ground observations, ice-thickness measurements, and low-altitude air photographs collected during or within three days of ERS-1 overpasses were used to evaluate SAR image patterns resulting from river ice. Results suggest usefulness of SAR for information pertinent to navigation through ice and evaluating ice jams and ice erosion along shores. |
