Abstract: From analysis of observational data and general circulation model simulations, empirical parameterizations are modelled which lead to occurrence of multiple equilibria in previously formulated energy-balance climate models (EBMs) of Budyko--Sellers type. By drawing analogy between present-day southern- and northern-hemisphere high-latitude conditions during glacial times, new parameterization has been developed for zonal planetary albedo. In particular, it is hypothesized that changes in temperature of northern-hemisphere north polar regions can cause development of high-latitude planetary albedo anomaly (i.e., occurrence of continental ice sheets) and shown that in this case zonal mean EBM admits multiple equilibria. New parameterization of ice-albedo--temperature feedback introduces concept of thin ice cap instability.
