Measurements of high number densities of ice crystals in the tops of tropical cumulonimbus / R.G. Knollenberg, K. Kelly, J.C. Wilson.

Title: Measurements of high number densities of ice crystals in the tops of tropical cumulonimbus / R.G. Knollenberg, K. Kelly, J.C. Wilson.
Author(s): Knollenberg, R. G.
Kelly, K.
Wilson, J. C.
Date: 1993.
In: Journal of Geophysical Research. (1993.), Vol. 98(D5) (1993)
Abstract: Imaging and light-scattering instruments were used during January/February 1987 experiment at Darwin, Australia, to measure ice-crystal size distributions in tops of cloud anvils associated with tropical cyclones. Two light-scattering instruments covered particles from 0.1 to 78 μm diameter, and particles >50 μm diameter were imaged with two-dimensional imaging probe. Measurements were made at altitudes ranging from 13 to 18 km at temperatures from --60 to --90°C. Data from western USA were used for comparison.
