Record #126306:

Evidence for winter/spring denitrification of the stratosphere in the nitrate record of Antarctic firn cores / Robert Mulvaney, Eric W. Wolff.

Title: Evidence for winter/spring denitrification of the stratosphere in the nitrate record of Antarctic firn cores / Robert Mulvaney, Eric W. Wolff.
Author(s): Mulvaney, Robert.
Wolff, Eric W.
Date: 1993.
In: Journal of Geophysical Research. (1993.), Vol. 98(D3) (1993)
Abstract: Firn core collected beneath polar vortex in Coats Land shows nitrate peaks occurring in spring or early autumn. These are less obvious in firn cores that are further north (Antarctic Peninsula sites). Circumstantial evidence suggests that peak may be due to sedimentation of polar stratospheric clouds from stratosphere during winter and spring. No change observed over last three decades. It may be possible to observe past stratospheric conditions over longer time scales from ice cores, but other sources can obliterate signal in ice from glacial periods.
