Abstract: Presents observations and data gathered during two fieldtrips in 1991. Discusses difficulties in obtaining demographic information in Soviet Union, and presents highlights of recent history of ethnic minorities in Chukotka and their geographical distribution. Describes main demographic features of these populations at present time (age structure, life expectancy, birth-rate, mortality, health, and migration). Makes comparison with demographic situation of Greenland Inuit.
