Abstract: Interdisciplinary research in Helgøy region north of Tromsø confirmed that there was no identifiable population in early Middle Ages, but acquired predominantly Saami population in late Middle Ages, with Norwegian population on small islands of outer district. Author discusses roots of these populations and mentions Swedish taxation of only "Finns" (Saami) as sign of current ethnic classification as well as influence on future migrations. Author cautions against reading back modern theories of ethnicity.
